Winner of the PFP Speech Competition 2023Prior to this competition, I always had the belief that English was a rigid subject, I would often get marked down for unconventional ideas or informal expressions. However, this experience completely shifted my perspective. It enabled me to confidently articulate and express my thoughts and ideas, making me realise that English is a fantastic means of self-expression.
My main lesson was that I've acknowledged that failure is possible even with maximum effort. However, regardless of the result, the crucial point is to persist and never give up. Ultimately, taking the leap to try is more important than succumbing to nerves or apprehension. Furthermore, this competition wasn’t merely about winning or losing. The most significant realisation was my understanding that failure isn’t a reflection of the effort given. What truly matters is the resilience to keep going despite setbacks.

Winner of the PFP Multimodal Competition 2023Ever since my time in secondary school, my passion for food science and promoting healthier eating has burned brightly within me. When I had the opportunity to present on a topic so dear to my heart, I immediately seized it. I dedicated myself daily to researching and rehearsing my slides, pouring lots of energy into this presentation. During my presentation, I found immense joy in engaging with a large audience, refining my skills in captivating and involving them throughout.
Addressing a sizable crowd allowed me to significantly overcome my stage fright, emphasising the importance of confidence in presentation delivery! All in all, this competition was more than a platform to talk about a subject close to my heart; it was a milestone in my personal growth. It reinforced my passion for food science while imparting invaluable lessons about confidence, audience engagement, and the profound impact a well-delivered presentation can have.

Second runners-up of the Code Overflow Hackathon 2023Third place in the Code Overflow Hackathon 2023 - It’s surreal! The journey was both an exhausting and fulfilling experience. Along with a tight deadline, we had to endure 3 intense and challenging days, but we managed to persevere and deliver a commendable project. Facing off against year 1 and 2 students, seemingly more skilled and experienced, initially made us nervous. Yet, we refused to let that deter us from trying our best! We learned a lot from this hackathon and achieving this rank among 20 teams fills us with immense pride!
I always plan ahead whether there is an important event, meeting and activities that I need to go to, so that I can allocate time whenever I can and balance them between my studies, so that I won't be stressed out with an overflowing amount of work in one day. This allowed me to attend and participate in many of the workshops, competitions and events, including the Code Overflow Hackathon 2023!

Before registering for the hackathon, I ensured my availability for all its scheduled days. Additionally, I managed my schoolwork outside of hackathon hours, ensuring that it didn’t interfere with my participation in the event. This approach allowed me to be fully engaged and participate in the hackathon without any clashes from external commitments.

My takeaway is that, really, a hackathon really sucks the life out of you. However, that in and of itself is a great opportunity and experience to compete with other people who has the same passion as me, which is programming. This experience has led me to many important lessons such as teamwork and collaboration, problem-solving skills to develop creative and innovative solutions, time management due to the time-crunching duration of the competition, and many more! And this will only be the start of one of my many competitions that I will have in the future. This competition has given me the foundational experience and knowledge to advance further beyond!

I learnt what brainstorming ideas was like in practice. They don’t have to be excellent ideas, they just have to be relevant. The best will be picked from all of them afterwards.
I have also learnt that if you have the right skillset in your team, it’s not only possible, but also recommended, to pursue creating more ambitious ideas. I think that Dennise did an astounding job implementing the ideas Jian Wei recommended, even though I thought a “social media fitness app” was too generalised of an idea.
